It was very disheartening to hear the news about El DeBarge’s drug relapse after what was shaping up to be one helluva comeback. The former lead singer of the ’80s R&B sibling group DeBarge recently checked himself into a treatment facility to deal with his ongoing battle with drugs. In a statement released early last week by his label, Geffen Records, El thanked his fans and requested privacy while he deals with his personal demons:
“I hate to disappoint my fans, but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone. I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time.”
According to BV Buzz, hip-hop superstar 50 Cent was one of the catalysts behind El seeking treatment for his drug dependency. The “Second Chance” singer’s drug issues (and those of his siblings) are well-documented and span multiple decades. In a very candid interview last year, El said of his addiction:
“I picked up a crack pipe when I was 25-years-old because I wanted to try it, and it took me 22 years to un-try it. But it’s a wrap now. I lost all that time with a pipe in my mouth. Now it’s a mic to my mouth.” (USA Today)
Let’s hope El’s able to “un-try it” on a permanent basis this time around. He’s in our prayers.
