On an unseasonably warm November evening, New York City was set abuzz by dueling concerts by a wordsmith and a technician; a producer and a man on a mission. As Kanye held a private listening session for his dark twisted comeback, seasoned veteran and newly-throned upstart Lloyd Banks held a victory concert of dramatic proportions in the heart of Times Square.
Set to the beat of heart-racing, pavement-pounding suburban kids (and their
girlfriends in stilettos), Banks claimed his own in this rare hometown concert.
Surprising were the joints that Banks didn’t perform…no ‘Hands Up’,
no ‘Smile’, and no pushin up on a bitch (that’s Bad News for you lames). In fact, nothing off the G-Unit catalogue made it to the stage, which is to surmise two things: for one, it’s integral for Banks to separate the two stages of his career, and also that he’s got enough dolo hits to pull a 90-minute set on his own. No 50, a serene hypeman, and a one-shot deal for Yayo, and Banks held his own.
Well, sorta. New York is back, Hip-Hop isn’t dead, and New York Hip-Hop is on the rise. Guest performers featured a who’s who of relevance, from Jeremiah, to Swizz Beatz, to Ryan Leslie, to Pusha T, to Juelz Santana, to Red Café, to show-closer and scene-stealer Fabolous. The night-cap performance of ‘Start It Up’ ended with all
the performers on the same stage, showing solidarity on some WWE vs. the World
A great show, a great comeback for the hometown hero PLK, and NYC was set
abuzz. In a week that featured a secret Kanye show, a Nicki Minaj monster jam, and a
Dipset Reunion, the kid Banks held his own. And, for old times sake, GGGG—
